Trend Alert: Amazing Lace

May 30, 2013

Dolce & Gabbana, Luisa Beccaria, Loewe, Oscar de la Renta, Ports 1961, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Saint Laurent, J. Mendel, Carven, Jason Wu – what did all these collections have in common for spring / summer 2013? The answer is a love affair with lace.

Used as both a finishing touch and a leading look, lace was a prominent feature across catwalks – spanning from dark and dramatic black to romantic pastels and bright tones, and finally ending on nude and white hot styles.

Dark lace was used to great effect at Dolce & Gabbana, whose collection was all about traditional Sicily and the designers’ own Italian heritage. The mix of the severe black lace with sexy cut-outs, embroideries, bodies and bra-tops – not to mention the over-sized jewellery,  made for one of the most evocative catwalks of the season.

Meanwhile, feminine pastels were an essential part of Temperley London’s and Oscar De La Renta’s romantic collections, whilst soft blue’s and green’s best worn for garden parties, were spotted at Valentino. Bright lace tones first cropped up at J Mendel – who showed a zingy orange – and we’re in full swing by the time London Fashion Week came around, as utilized by both Simone Rocha and Erdem.

Lastly, one of the hottest trends of the season emerged at the international fashion weeks for white and nearly nude lace. Oscar De La Renta showed chic white skirt suits best suited to New York’s Upper East set, whilst for Ports lace was used as a feminine accent on sleeves and hidden under voluminous layers.  Always the rebel, Roberto Cavalli went for a rock n roll feel, where leather was either cut to resemble lace or the fabric itself was used in abundance. The main attraction here; leather lace trousers, nude body-con dresses and many a floor-sweeping gown.
