Getting to Know Yumi Junior Designer Debbie Green

September is fashion month! The four fashion weeks New York, London, Milan and Paris run back to back and reveal to us the trends for Spring/Summer 2013. To celebrate this fashion frenzy, we sat down with our Junior Yumi Designer, Debbie Green and talked to her about her life as a fashion designer and our current AW12 collection………

I remember always drawing clothes from a very young age – I loved using my Fashion Wheel (GREAT retro toy – refresh your memory here) and when I got a bit older and realised it was possible to draw clothes for a living, I knew that was what I wanted to do! I went on to study Fashion Design at Birmingham City University and while I was there traveled down to London to intern at Yumi – where once I graduated I got a job!
Essentially doing my hobby for a job! Getting to design clothes and do trend research, spending all day looking at gorgeous clothes! The inspiration trips to China are also always fun.
It’s so exciting to see something I’ve designed come to life, sometimes I take a step back and realise how cool it is to be doing this job! The biggest impact is when I see the finished pieces in store – my designs on a hanger for people to buy!
Well I’m a bit biased as these are some of the ones that I designed! First up is the pinafore dress – I’m looking forward to layering it up over the Winter. Then the trio of flying ducks jumper dress is more than a bit quirky but that’s what we’re good at at Yumi!
I know everyone says it but that’s because it’s true – work experience is key, it’s how I got my job after all! If you show you’re willing to work hard, start from the bottom and work your way up, that’s really appreciated.
Well, to name a few….. Carven, Orla Kiely and I’m still holding our for a Luella comeback – love her!
Alexa Chung – she is always cool and on-trend but still slightly girly and loves to add a quirky touch, which really appeals to me.
Nicola Roberts – I really love how her style has evolved since the early Girls Aloud days and could really see her in Yumi.
Shopping! An unlimited budget would also be ideal…..
